André, who I assume is the owner, is an absolute gem. He is so sweet and welcoming, and even gave my partner and I a new baby bunny. ❤️ What a beautiful experience.

Informal farming commune. A chance to see sheep, chickens and goats among other animals up close in the heart of the city. Andre the informal caretaker, welcomes volunteers and visitors as well as any donations of food for the animals. When visiting, always bring fruit and veg for the animals. Currently looking for volunteer to care for the horse.

Lovely rustic place to take the kids. Don't expect anything fancy but you'll definitely have fun with the animals. Don't forget to take some fruit u0026 veg to feed the animals.

The Farm at Erf 81 has been in the care and custodianship of André Laubscher for 22 years. An old military property originally grazing and farmland, it was given to the military by Queen Victoria in 1893 in the period between the two Boer wars. The main buildings were built for ammunition storage and they served the cannons on the hill where the noon day gun fires every day at midday. It is an unbelievably beautiful piece of land operating as an Urban Farm.
It is currently not very effective due to a lack of support from officialdom. The residents at the farm are under threat of eviction because, as one might imagine, the 8 ha. in the centre of the City Bowl is very valuable land and over the years there have been a great many thieves, rogues and property developers who have been keen on making a profit from being involved in the sale of the land.
Under the gentle and reserved guidance of André and the legal team supporting them, the community have so far managed to avoid the eviction and now in 2017, the Erf 81 NPO is attempting to consolidate the various activities on the Farm.
There is a food and vegetables market on Sundays and the public are welcome to visit the Farm at any time. There is ample space for walking, running, exploring the gardens and bush. The petting farm under the care of André is available and open to parents with children and there are a number of farm animals living happily on the property.
Many artists have produced work while living or workshopping on the farm and there is a constant flow of artistic endeavor in and out of Erf 81.
Unfortunately the constant threat of eviction to the community produces stresses and trauma which affects the people and without official support the degradation of the beautiful old buildings and the general infrastructure is inevitable.
In the meantime, it is a wonderful place to spend a bit of time escaping the pressures of the city and is truly a hidden gem and rough diamond a few hundred meters from the city centre, well within walking distance of the Company Gardens.
