This is a great hospital but I've just been disappointed this afternoon as i paid a visit to a patient. Only to be told the visiting hours has been changed without any notice. Without respect some people had to ask for permission from their workplaces and given probably 30 minutes. You arrive at 2 only to hear that visiting has been changed to 3 o'clock. Even the person you are visiting isn't aware of such changes. I'm so disappointed.

Worst trauma unit experience. I only went there because it was the closest one to where I lived. I was in severe pain and the nurses told me to open a file. The admin were having a fat chat while I sat there in pain. When they eventually noticed me, the admin guy was very aggressive and made sly comments. They asked me questions that could have easily been completed once my pain was attended to. There made patients sit in chairs with drips because there was not enough beds - now this point, I understand, since its covid. But the way they were rotating patients was so inhumane considering all these patients looked like they were in severe pain. The doctors and nurses also forced me to be discharged even though my pain had not subdued. They didn't even properly explain why I was in so much pain. They made patients walk all the way to the other side of the building to get medication without proper instructions or explanations. Lastly, the security guards acted like they were medical professionals when my guardian asked for an update on me. They were rude and so aggressive.

However, I give props to the night time nurses that worked on the 31st of March. They were so friendly. I think I managed to not throw an absolute fit because of them. The morning nurses were horrible however.

If you can, avoid the trauma unit/ER at this hospital. You could actually be doing yourself more harm than good.

Each and every person that works there, the security, the cleaning personnel, the receptionists, and doctors and nurses you should be extremely proud of yourselves. Well done keep it up. Thank you to the lady who did my dad's scan at the vascular section and to the people at the speech therapists as well.

The hospital is great.
It's the doctors or nurses and staff that makes the place either memorable or horrific.

I've been attending e16 outpatient dept for the past 33yrs and have usually had a pleasant experience. Possibly because I have a lot of patience and wait quietly. I don't kick up a fuss with staff as they are also just doing their jobs to the best of their ability under strenuous and difficult circumstances (covid for one )

However, the doctor I saw was everything you hate in Drs.
Cut a long story short, I was told there is nothing that can be done for me anymore.
I had a little meltdown in the room, tears running down my face but not making any noise. I was looked at and repeated, there nothing we can do for the pain.
I've been crying for two days and still tear up now writing this.
33yrs living with sarcoidosis and the last 10 or so years living in pain from mild to excruciating. Every single day, every part of my body.
The one time I decided to open up and tell my pulmo I cannot handle any more pain, don't know what to do about it, thats the response I get.
I sat crying in the public corridor till I could proceed calmly on my way.

Getting back to the actual building,
Groote Schuur Hospital is iconic and historic.
There are numerous spaces filled with history. Descriptions and actual pieces that were used from days gone by.
Herewith are a few pics I managed on my way out.

Grootte Schuur Hospital Covid Testing Department is really excellent. Free Covid Testing. More stars are needed here for management and staff involved. Grootte Schuur has excellent service and employees working there in general.

Thank you to Nurse Waybah that recommended that I do my covid test at Grootte Schuur Hospital. Nurse Waybah is amazing for suggesting this. Thank you ❤️My husband was admitted for covid there.
Her suggestion saved me time of having to find a place to do it, the test is done at a newly created section at P4, the hospital parking area. I parked at the parking just before that. This hospital is so well managed. The parking attendant and security was so helpful. 5 stars. Each testing person is offered a chair, that they will use and carry with them when they move to the next seating area, until they have tested. A light plastic one. I saw some Hospital staff also tests there. Very efficient. Some testing stations charge about R850 for this test, some medical aids do it for you, but make you pay for it, if you tested negative. This service was so well done and Free. They have very clean toilets set up, with paper if you need. Sanitiser all over. Someone takes your details when you start, be sure to give your cellphone number for whatsapp communication later.Enough staff on duty. Everyone seated looks happy. When it's your turn, you have an option of doing the test yourself, no one forcing anything in your nose over here. They use a long cotton bud that goes in your nostril for a sample up there. After the test they give you information that is in all our languages, for easy understanding of what you need to know, if you test positive or negative, it also has a list for people you have been in contact with, this is very important, also in the info, they have a covid whatsapp number if you need a certificate sent to you or for questions relating to the test. This number has someone that actually responds in good time. My test was done in about an hour. An amazing experience. Grootte Schuur is well staffed and well organised. Remember to be nice and smile and thank the heroes working there. ❤️

The day nurse staff is very nice nurses and they are friendly. But thus evening nurses are so rude and keep talking about me in there language. I'm a patient. The 1 nurse pulled my leg when she wanted blood pressure. And also asked me a retatical question like why do you need a blanket .
Firstly being a nurse was your choice. No one forced you. So treat your patient with care and don't be rude to them because you tired. This is unexplainable and this nurses needs warnings
