Love the calamari starter (the full plate is big enough for two to share). The burgers, pork ribs and steaks are always a good time. I'm also personally a big fan of their creamed spinach

Divine calamari and mussels starters!! Delicious Wagyu burger. Chips are divine! Average restaurant prices. Good house wine by the glass. Cozy, warm, great background soundtrack. Lovely evening. Attentive service.

The search for the perfect steak has ended. That search brought me to the Rare Grill in Kenilworth. A simple 8 seater wooden glad two floor restaurant run by Greg, an ardent meat connoisseur.

Grassfed, veld reared, dry-aged for more than 28 days and cooked medium rare - steak perfection!!
Dry-aging is when the animal is slaughtered, butchered and where certain parts of the animal are allowed to rest under carefully controlled conditions for a specific period of time.
Under these conditions enzymes go to work and you end up with a piece of meat that is  savoury, a little sweet and a little bitter in flavour.
It is this complexed depth of flavour that distinguishes Rare Grill steaks from your run on the mill store bought wet matured steak sealed in plastic.

I order the 300g rump and it was cooked perfectly. The steak was savoury and slightly sweet with a creamy finish. That creaminess comes from the yellowish coloured fat on the meat.
The humble chip that accompanied the steak was crisp and golden on the outside with a soft smooth centre.

Desert was a simple fondant style chocolate hotpot. A soft fluffy chocolate cake, smothered in chocolate sauce, adorned with a Magnum icecream.

A shot of Vodka chocolate was the finale to a delicious evening.

We stumbled across this gem while driving through Kenilworth and were thrilled that we found it. The welcome and the service were excellent. We both had steaks which is what we were in the mood for. The Hollandse Biefstuk and the Fillet were both done perfectly medium rare. The steaks were tender, tasty and juicy. We both had the delicious crispy chips and I had a bearnaise sauce. The complimentary chocolate u0026 cream shot was the perfect ending to the evening. We look forward to meeting our next steak craving at The Rare Grill
