A 2hour 15min diary of lunch at The Yard
I am not sure why restaurants do not plan for days that they expect to run full service. We had the most disappointing Mother's Day brunch at the Yard, Vu0026A Waterfront, Silo district on Sunday 08 May 2022.
{** Note - this might be a long review - but it is indicative of how much of spare time I had at the table, making notes while we waited**}
Herewith a diary of a Mothers day brunch, from a rather disappointed customer:
10.55 : Having booked a table in advance , we arrived 5 minutes early, waited 20 minutes to be shown to a table. A group of 6 ahead of us said they were waiting for some time too to be shown a table.
11:15. The seven people in our party (all adults) were ushered (or squeezed is more appropriate) into what appears at best to be a 4 to 5 seater table. I was forced to place my seat precariously close to a stair ! (see pic). I complained to the Maitre D whose response was there was nothing he could do, but he would "try" to seat us at a table appropriate for the number in our party. There was no explanation or apology as to why they did not hold our reservation!! The table change never happened.
11:30. Waiting for someone to take an order from us. Hmm..I should not have skipped breakfast.
11:35.. At last, 40 minutes after arriving, someone came to offer us drinks.
11:56. Three of the 7 drinks arrive..yipee.. some of us can finally quench our thirst, an entire hour after arriving.. Am wondering if this is the standard here?
12:02. Drink number 4 arrived…. Three more to go. I am wondering if brunch will ever arrive. A plus - the Mango lassi was really tasty!
12:05. Drink number 5 and 6 has come... we still have a fighting chance that drink number 7 will still come...
12:07. Finally the last drink arrives..77minutes after arrival.. in the meantime the sound of rumbling tummies around the table grows louder.
12:10. Someone asks if we are ok, now that drinks have arrived.. at least there is some compassion from staff.
12:17.. meals now arriving.. much excitement around the table to be finally fed!!
12:20.. can we get cutlery??
12:24. With cutlery at hand, I tucked into my Big Bombay breakfast is cold, and looks like very poor value for its price of R115 (see pic); there was nothing "Indian" about the watery scrambled eggs; and the promised crispy potato rosti is nowhere to be seen on the plate.. sadly I am too hungry to request for a warm meal. On the plus side, the Dosas were enjoyed by all three who ordered it , save for one undercooked lamb sausage served with it. Moletan pasta did not inspire, though the chicken wings that were served was considered "good"..
12:39. The group of 6 who had arrived the same time as us were departing, complaining loudly that they not get their meals after such a long wait. I don't blame them.. it's 1hour 45mins since they arrived!! I noted at least two other parties walking out - being totally exasperated at the lack of service.
At 13.15 we finally left. Mahle who was the waitron who eventually took over our table was clearly apologetic; especially at the end as we are leaving; He apology was the only plus for me - a weary waiter but who was conscious of the tardy service on offer that day.
