I had the worst experience.
I started to feel ill, went to a doctor who diagnosed that I had some form of infection, gave me medication and booked me off. However after a few days, I only felt worse and worse to an extent that I was barely conscious. As I am alone in the city with no friends or relative near by to assist, the one Sunday I knew I had to seek urgent medical attention. I notified the closest relative who is a 2-3 hour drive away from me that I will goo to the closest emergency room. Which so happens to be the Bedford Life hospital that was merely couple of meters away from where I live. I knew all clinics are closed on Sundays.
I managed to get to the emergency room and said I need urgent help. Initially the nurses were very quick to respond, I felt relieved as I knew I would now receive the care i knew i needed.
As they approached me, i started to slowly fall to the ground as I could barely stand. They proceeded firstly to ask me, not what is wrong, but too ask what is my medical aid details?
I informed them that i do not have medical aid. as soon as i said no, the nurses immediately said they can not help me. I asked, if there is anyway they could contact an ambulance that can take me to a government hospital. Not only did they say NO, but no one even had a number so that I can try and contact an ambulance for myself.
I pleaded with the staff, nurses, reception...no one was at all interested in helping, not even to contact a relative of mine or anything.
Fortunately, as i did notify someone before I went, they arrived. By the time my relative got to me i was almost completely unconscious, I was already un-cooperative. By the time we got to the nearest goverment hospital that was 30 min away, i had to be resuscitated. And I was in a coma for 3 days.
This was a very shocking experience for me. I was merely minutes away from dying, and not a single person , nurse, doctor, reception, secuirity...NO ONE at the Bedford Hospital was at all interested in helping me all because I didn't have medical aid.
More so, the fact that not one person there even knew the Public / Goverment Ambulance number was behond me. No one was even willing to attempt to find the number, on google, or ask anyone.
This is a hospital, one would think that they have all relevant emergency number available. ( the ambulance number I managed to obtain was not working)
No one in the emergency rooms was even willing to place me on a chair, or ensure I am stable. I was left there on the floor and just passed by.
Firstly I was extremely shocked at this as nurses, doctors takes an oath to assist people with medical issues especially emergencies.
Not to mention the fact that it is LAW, that no hospital can turn a patient away in a case of emergency. They should have by law at least tended to me and seeked assistance to have me taken to a government hospital.
And no, the hospital was not busy with ques of people or anything.
I was merely minutes away from dying, when i read my file report at the hospital where i received treatment, I was so overwhelmed to realize just how close I was to death. I almost arrived at the government hospital to late.
What would have happened if I died, there on the floor in the Bedford Life Hospital emergency room?
I am very well aware of the difference between being on medical aid and not. but in a case of emergecy such as this and so many more. to be turned away, treated like trash, from those who claim to protect, assist and be in a profession of health care should be ashamed.
I am lucky to be alive today. Not because of any one that day at the Bedford Life hospital. I certianly do hope that no one else will ever experience what I did that day.
