We spent a month at Amberg Country Estate in Paarl. Unfortunately, it wasn't the experience we hoped for.
At first sight, it looks picture-perfect. Tasteful and comfortable tiny houses up the mountain slope, overlooking Paarl and the Hawequas mountain. In the middle of a lush green garden. It really is picture-perfect. Until you spend a couple of days in one of the bungalows (let alone a month). Then suddenly you notice the noisy N1 road, with trucks giving their best roars while climbing the mountain (24/7). Or the lot-of-the-times smelly bathroom. The broken dishwasher. The outdated internet facilities (although promised otherwise). A broken deck chair. A dining table that in fact is a work desk (one side only). A garden set that can't be used due to old paint staining your clothes. All things you wouldn't notice at first sight, but that start nagging after a couple of days. Truth be told: the owners are very friendly, and considerate to a certain point. But they are also fully convinced they are owning a four-star estate. So most of the 'minor details' we brought up during our stay were not (or simply couldn't be) solved. We ended up spending 10 days of this month somewhere else, just to get away from it all. After a lot of discussion, we got a little refund but still, we way overpaid for what we got. Not in the eyes of the owners though. Since we were lucky enough to enjoy a month in a 'Four-star estate'. Well, maybe it once was. But those days are long gone.
