Barbazul was recommended by a local who explained that the food would be good but the service probably slow. Here's our experience.
Deco:
Wonderfully decorated. I loved that they have pieces of "meat" hanging everywhere without it making it look tacky. Tables are nice and the menus are gorgeous. Bathrooms were boring at best. Staff appearance is pleasing.
Service:
We were received at the entrance by a young lady who also turned out to be our waitress. She serviced well, was friendly, attentive enough and deserved the bigger than average tip she received. Only concern is that she brought a draught which had a chipped rim and was quite sharp. Barman should be mindful of the condition of his beverage holders.
Food:
I ordered the 750g Angus T-bone, medium-rare with fries, coleslaw, and peppercorn sauce. That came in at a hefty R470. It was worth every cent. The meat was perfectly cooked and just about melted in my mouth. It is, hands down, the best T-bone I've been privileged to eat. The fries were tasty. The coleslaw was glorious, tangy and fresh. The peppercorn sauce was just the cherry on top of a very delicious meal.
My dad ordered the carpetbagger, well-done (I know...), fries, crumbed mushrooms and also the peppercorn sauce. The carpetbagger was underwhelming, even average and was most definitely not well-done. I know it is hard to believe but some people prefer their meat like that and if specified the kitchen staff should adhere. Fries and sauce were the same as for my meal. Now on to the crumbed mushrooms. They were absolutely terrible. They looked like dried peaches, not mushrooms. They were completely overdone and tasteless. We didn't finish them and I would steer clear of them as far as possible.
I would have rated the restaurant 2 stars because of my dad's meal if mine hadn't been as good as it was.
I'd recommend the restaurant to anyone that visits Welkom or who is local. The food can be great, the service is good, the drinks are cold and the locals are friendly.
