The main hospital was surprisingly neat for a government hospital. And according to my family member who was admitted, the staff and nurses are helpful, caring and friendly. Inside definitely looks better than outside, and security there is friendly and helpful. I'd give the hospital 4* considering it's a government entity.
But... the Emergency section is so different. It is shocking! It's filthy, security is rude and the fact that my disabled brother (and many other patients) had to sit in a wheelchair (or hard chairs) for over 30 HOURS, not able to get himself to a bathroom, and noone coming to check if he is okay or needs to go (while waiting for a bed to be admitted) is just inhumane! Patients were sleeping on chairs, the floor and some in their cars. The wait can be hours to get a scan or xray done, as there's limited porters (and yet the country has probably about 50% unemployment!!). There is just no excuse to leave blood marks on the floor for over 12 hours and have filthy bathrooms and unclockable doors (as observed by myself). The people at the admin office were hostile and unhelpful, despite me being friendly and showing appreciation. The support staff (more admin) are so busy they don't communicate with patients and leave them waiting for many, many hours, not knowing what is happening. It is a sad, sad reality to see the state of this department, considering people arrived their in dire straits and need help. There's a queue just to get a file opened, and people sit in pain and discomfort for many hours before being helped. Noone pre-screens to determine the severity of each case, as everyone is led to a queue!! My brother had a stroke, not knowing if it was still in progress, we waited over an hour just to speak to someone. ???? I have to add though that all the Doctors and nurses we dealt with were helpful and had a genuine interest in their patients well-being. I saw some going way beyond their call of duty to take care of their patients. Please Lord may we never have to go back there again for an emergency!! ????

Pictures as is and was not altered or manipulated. The hospital is generally dirty and badly maintained. Covid protocols are not followed. It is af if they don't want to find another patient to be admitted. The tent provided is often unmanned. Temperature is not being checked. Waiting time for medicine is long with queues too long to do proper social distancing. Staff are doing what they can under the circumstances, however they are often not helpful. If you have to choose between state departments where you will eventually being helped, it will be a hospital rather than a police station. So Helen Joseph is not that bad.

My husband was admitted on 4 Sep 2022 for brain surgery to remove a tumor. Ward 21 . The nurses are so rude and arrogant. I thought it was just that Sunday shift. The next few days, every shift had different nurses , all the same. Unhelpful, rude , treat you with no respect or dignity. They get together and laugh and mock you when you ask a question . Yet I remained polite and thought I'm not stooping to your level. The most unapproachable lot.

I don't understand all of the good reviews on this. Firstly I needed to go to the Psych reception and they were not very kind and I felt very discriminated against for having said that I needed a Psych evaluation and hearing the receptionists response. I had to get a lift to a print shop because they wouldn't take my pdf and I came back here and the reception door is locked and I made a trip here for no reason.

Been a patient at HJH. The renal unit is good considering the state funding and services that are limited across the country. Not entirely impressed with the in hospital situation. The state really needs to add better funding to hospital budgets. Food is lacking in diversity. Beds and equipment. Plumbing and general conditions of the hospital is not good. Staff in the wards are not very attentive and seem a bit indifferent toward patients.

Hi. If you are in a wheelchair, you will receive priority treatment. Otherwise, it could be a long wait for ordinary, able bodied people. It's best to leave home very early to be in the front of the queue.
