The service of the Neurology department is not up to standard. There is one dr. Then even when you the first patient to arrive the people who are first time patients gets helped. They let the elderly people suffer. My dad is 85 years old we have been at the hospital since 5 clock. He is the first patient ti arrive and we were still not seen by the doctor. Only 12 clock a doctor arrived and only wrote prescription and seeing first timec patients. We still waiting.
The lady at the head department of neurology. Just said its procedure to help first time patients. She was not willing to help or lusten. When another white male tried to interfere and speak to me i was ushered out of that department by the lady door closed and it felt like a white discrimenation towards us. 12.40 and still no doctors. The sisters are great its the doctors. And again a new patient was taken. Why given numbers but we dont get helped first. You as doctors and department sucks. This is not Batho Pele. We only got to see a dr after 14. We only left the hospital after 16. The departments dont even know the clinic numbers. Half of medisiene is not there. The one department sister cant give us a date if the neurology department refers us. This entire hospital is not working together. They are definetly failing and then they want to bring in the NHI. When that happens, believe me then this hospital will go further down the drains.

What public hospitals are concerned I personally think Steve Biko hospital is the best public health facility. Very clean, and the nurses and doctors are very professional always willing to help always friendly. Well organized super sufficient, all other public health facilities must use Steve Biko hospital as an example and strive to get on the same level of providing a especial health care as well as the excellent aftercare they provide.
It doesn't feel like a typical public health facility it's more like a private hospital. Very impressed

I went to their 8th floor (Reproductive Unit) Friday at 06hr00, was glad to be number one and by 06hr50 we were already being attended to. I had never seen in a such clean public hospital. For out patients will definitely re visit

Terrible, just terrible in every way possible. I truly feel sorry for all those dependant on this appallingly managed institute giving not even giving the basic desperate care to their patients as is needed.
This is not a hospital, it's where you go to die of horrible neglect.
Avoid this place if you can, if not, be prepared with all essential documents.
Best of luck to you and your loved ones.

My sister was in this pathetic excuse of a hospital 06-00am to do blood tests. It's now 20-30pm and now they can't find the test results and lost all of them. My sister been in excruciating pain since this morning. No pain medicine and no drip were given and no Dr available to see here. Last time my sister had something to eat or drink was yesterday. My mother has been standing there next to her since 06-00am this morning. My mom's not a child and was treated so badly and shouted at just because she wanted to sit down on a chair. Now they take the chairs away and chase my mother out and make her stand outside in the cold night. It's really the most unprofessional, unreliable, horrific hospital, the utmost worst. It's probably someone with no people's skills and definitely not trained properly that can carry on like that. Steve biko will be hearing Afriforum etc.

Surgeons, Doctors, professors, nurses and staff are amazing at Steve Biko. I felt safe and in good hands. Bless these people who help others ???????? I had heart surgery and my experience was comfortable.

Patience. That word works wonders in this place.

Trust me, I understand that you’re either frustrated or ill and tired, but the best thing you can do is remain calm, cool and collected.

I spent 16 days in this hospital, it came with its high and low points.

First and foremost, Dr Pretorius is a phenomenal gem. I had an ERCP and a cholecystectomy done by him. What I truly appreciated was that he was straight forward yet compassionate with his patients.

Please note: there is NO HOT WATER for showers. I and one other lady were the only ones to use it daily.

Toilets need to be cleaned hourly and thoroughly, not once a day. I cleaned the toilet after 24 hours had lapsed. Yep, gloves, soap and toilet paper. What can I say. I needed to use it.

Food isn’t amazing, but I was grateful for it.

Now, for those who do not know, a team of junior doctors will monitor you throughout the day and night and give a walk through feedback session to the head doctor/professor in the morning.

These junior Doctors were finally put in line when Dr Pretorius had to do the walk through with them one morning. I found that most of the junior Doctors were all over the place and many lacked compassion and failed to communicate with their patients. I understand that they do +24 hour shifts, but it’s not fair to patients. I recall one evening where a Doctor re-adjusted my drip instead of taking it out and putting it elsewhere on my hand. In pain and that area swelling, I told a different doctor who laughed and said she’d call the other doctor back. Surprise, surprise, I took it out myself later that evening since no one came to assist me.

The nurses from ward 6.5, general surgery, were great. Honestly they felt like a group of mothers and sisters to me over time.

I’ll admit, there were a few that I didn’t care for. I recall one evening when they had to put antibiotics into my drip, which was not in, so she threw away my antibiotics and didn’t bother to give me the oral option as the other nurses did.

Though the ones that actually care for you, make you laugh and treat you like a human being are wonderful. Trust me, there are more good staff members than bad ones.
