Legendary. Chill spot, good music performances, and pretty comfortable rooms. No ac, so rooms get a bit humid at night, and the music is won't to rage so light sleepers might struggle to sleep.

Still a great joint and a one-stop-shop in terms of bar, pool, bed and breakfast. Awesome location.

I stayed twice over a two week period. The first stay was in a private; very comfortable. The second stay was in a female dorm upstairs; when it rains you can hear every drop due to the type of roofing, and you can hear everything outside from the dorm, the music from the clubs/lounges. I highly recommend the private if you’d like to get some rest. The staff was great. The website needs to be updated for prices for the tours as they did not match what was quoted at the booking.

Stayed here as a couple for three nights in a private room. They were friendly and knowledgeable about local spots. The rooms were basic and it certainly is a backpacker hostel (sticky common areas, unwashed dishes etc.)--but we ended up really enjoying the laid back vibe here. Loved the mix of locals and travelers. The wifi was off while we were here which was a pain, and loadshedding was severe--but they had battery operated lights/candles to use for the rooms. Would avoid driving around at night in this area and plan to arrive before dark.

I stayed there for 6 days(mon-sat). And their service was great. The rooms are very neat. It's a great place to book at.
If you love to party and have fun, it's just perfect for that. As it's close to entertainment areas.

We stopped in to ask about walking tours. They normally don’t leave until 15:00 and we were there 11:45. However the very friendly staff called and arranged for a guide. We enjoyed a cider from the very nice bartender while we waited. The guide arrived before we finished our drink! We had a lovely, informative tour with Ayanda of the history of Maboneng precinct and the graffiti and wall art. They cannot go to Kwa Mai Mai anymore but we didn’t mind that. All-in-all the staff at the Hostel and the tour were wonderful.

Pros: friendly young staff and location in the heart of urban Joburg

Cons:
1. You have to walk across the whole building to use the bathroom (very uncomfortable at night)
2. Literally nothing other than a bed and a small table in the run down rooms
3. It’s incredibly loud EVERY SINGLE NIGHT of the week, so don’t expect to sleep before 2AM
4. You don’t really feel safe, as strangers walk around at every hour of the day
5. Bathrooms/Toilets are quite dirty during the day

I counted the hours to check out to be honest.

All in all it is a very good hostel
The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were clean
There is a well equipped kitchen and a very nice balcony
My problem was the following:
The bar in the hostel was open to anyone, so you don't have to have rented a room in the hostel to enter the hostel.
Around 9/10 am, drunk people are on the road and annoy you even though you only want to smoke a cigarette.
You should feel safe in this hostel and not be annoyed by strangers in the evening.
I also find it almost irresponsible to sell the guests that you can go out here without any problems.
Our Uber driver asked us if we felt safe here and if he should take us somewhere else.
It is just a pure stress to go to a restaurant here in the evening and 2 days before we arrived a guest was robbed only 20 metres from the hostel.
If you want to experience Johannesburg the way it is, this is the place for you.
Otherwise I would look for a hotel in the north of Johannesburg (Melville, Rosebank etc).
