What an experience for a solo female traveler.... I am shocked and amazed at what I experienced at Backpackers Connection.
Upon arrival, the first day, I was received and welcomed by Cameron, the "concierge" - he was friendly, helpful and very informative! He showed me around the property and guided me to my room.
Quiet time.... that's what I was looking for and THAT is what this place resonated.
I was excited about this.... I pulled out my laptop and was ready to dive into and finalize my research on travel, tourism and life in the grips of a pandemic..... but to my horror, there was no wifi reception! Problem....prior to my arrival, I had spent valuable time looking for an establishment that offered internet/wifi solely in view of my current requirements - a Quiet place where I would be able to complete my work.
I asked politely for assistance with the wifi (thinking that there was something that I was doing wrong), the owner - Mike - offered an excuse about towers being faulty etc. etc.... and that there was NOTHING that could be done to remedy the problem. Now, my life experience working in corporate service and sales taught.... imprinted on me a valuable ethic and it is "never give an excuse rather offer a solution!" In this case, I was given an excuse and that was good enough for the OWNER.
The little problem solver that I am, instinctively kicked in to gear and I asked Cameron if we could use a wifi extender? To which the owner again told me that due to the "tower" problem, not an option. I fetched my personal extender and voila! Problem solved... not a word from the owner....
My first morning was a bit crazy... I woke up and readied myself for breakfast (which was advertised as included on their own as well as various booking sites) but no breakfast was in sight and the lack thereof was not mentioned by anyone. I called a cab and went out in search of breakfast....
I arrived on the 26th December and was booked to stay until the 4th January. On the morning of the 30th the ball dropped! There was no cabs in the vicinity and I thought.... well let me ask if there is anything that the kitchen could offer for breakfast.... mistake of my life!!! How dare I ask? Cameron was a sweetheart and being very apologetic offered me a slice of bread with Bovoril spread. At this point the owner Mike walked into the kitchen and told me "just so you know, there is NO breakfast included!" His attitude was very forceful and abrupt. In defense I asked him why they advertise breakfast included? He did not deemed it necessary to answer me for he turned his back on me and walked away.
Poor Cameron was so embarrassed and was dumb struck. He apologized profusely. I was talking to Cameron about the situation when out of nowhere Mike appeared and told me to "pack up your stuff, I don't want you here"....
What a horrible way to treat domestic guests! Shame on you!!
