I needed a nearby place to sleep at short notice. Because the Backpackers Connection is on the Lekkeslaap platform, I could find it easily on the map, book online and pay by card, the work of a few minutes.

Cameron and the dogs came out to meet me, and before long I was registered, and had staked my claim to bed in the clean four-bed dorm.

To sum it up -Amazing Host, and a lovely environment.
They (Camaron and Mike) went beyond what I expected to accommodate me. And to make my stay not just comfortable, but homey.
Definitely not just value for money. But an amazing place to destress, relax and take a moment to find peace.
I would go beyond recommending this place, and say that if you are in Johannesburg. Please go here you would never be disappointed.
Keep up the amazing work guys! Definitely made a lasting impression

What an experience for a solo female traveler.... I am shocked and amazed at what I experienced at Backpackers Connection.

Upon arrival, the first day, I was received and welcomed by Cameron, the "concierge" - he was friendly, helpful and very informative! He showed me around the property and guided me to my room.

Quiet time.... that's what I was looking for and THAT is what this place resonated.

I was excited about this.... I pulled out my laptop and was ready to dive into and finalize my research on travel, tourism and life in the grips of a pandemic..... but to my horror, there was no wifi reception! Problem....prior to my arrival, I had spent valuable time looking for an establishment that offered internet/wifi solely in view of my current requirements - a Quiet place where I would be able to complete my work.

I asked politely for assistance with the wifi (thinking that there was something that I was doing wrong), the owner - Mike - offered an excuse about towers being faulty etc. etc.... and that there was NOTHING that could be done to remedy the problem. Now, my life experience working in corporate service and sales taught.... imprinted on me a valuable ethic and it is "never give an excuse rather offer a solution!" In this case, I was given an excuse and that was good enough for the OWNER.

The little problem solver that I am, instinctively kicked in to gear and I asked Cameron if we could use a wifi extender? To which the owner again told me that due to the "tower" problem, not an option. I fetched my personal extender and voila! Problem solved... not a word from the owner....

My first morning was a bit crazy... I woke up and readied myself for breakfast (which was advertised as included on their own as well as various booking sites) but no breakfast was in sight and the lack thereof was not mentioned by anyone. I called a cab and went out in search of breakfast....

I arrived on the 26th December and was booked to stay until the 4th January. On the morning of the 30th the ball dropped! There was no cabs in the vicinity and I thought.... well let me ask if there is anything that the kitchen could offer for breakfast.... mistake of my life!!! How dare I ask? Cameron was a sweetheart and being very apologetic offered me a slice of bread with Bovoril spread. At this point the owner Mike walked into the kitchen and told me "just so you know, there is NO breakfast included!" His attitude was very forceful and abrupt. In defense I asked him why they advertise breakfast included? He did not deemed it necessary to answer me for he turned his back on me and walked away.

Poor Cameron was so embarrassed and was dumb struck. He apologized profusely. I was talking to Cameron about the situation when out of nowhere Mike appeared and told me to "pack up your stuff, I don't want you here"....

What a horrible way to treat domestic guests! Shame on you!!

By far the most chill place to stay if you are stopping over in Johannesburg for a night or two.

Helpful friendly staff, beautiful clean environment with a nice swimming pool, pool table, bar, etc. The breakfast is absolutely fantastic aswell and the perfect hangover cure after a long night of meeting interesting people in the chilled out area around the bar/pool.

The property is situated far enough from the airport so you can actually have a good nights rest without all the constant noise from planes passing by and they have a shuttle to pick you up and drop you off at the airport as needed.

Whether you are stying in one of their awesome tents or sleeping in a dorm, I can highly recommend Backpackers Connection to anyone who needs a relaxing place to stay while in Johannesburg.

Anybody wanting to spend from one night to one month in Johannesburg near the airport, without spending a fortune for a sterile hotel, this is the place to be. After nine nights, my Mom and I felt like part of a family. The rooms are clean and neat, the tents are equipped with everything you could need, the communal kitchen, breakfast area, pool, bar or "chill" area and lounges are wonderful places to meet travellers from all walks of life. A truly unique and delightful experience, at a very reasonable price. Thanks to Michael, Colleen, Barbara, Wesley, Anna, Irwin and Wisdom for making our visit to family and friends a memorable time. We will be back.
